Alopecia Areata
What is alopecia areata? Alopecia areata is a common skin disorder seen in children and young adults. It is characterized by hair loss in localized round areas on the scalp and occasionally on the eyebrows. A positive family history for alopecia areata is found in 10% to 20% of patients.
Novia: Known to be fairly common amond young adults. Personally I've known 4 other friends who experienced the same condition and only 1 of them is more severe but the others are recovering well.
In short, I understand the condition as a genetic disorder, caused by overactive antibodies which attack hair follicles mistakenly.
What is the chance of hair regrowing?
The prognosis for most children is excellent. Complete regrowth of the hair occurs within a year in 95% of children with alopecia areata. About 30% will have a future episode of alopecia areata. Rarely, all the scalp hair or all the scalp and body hair are lost in the disease.
Wiki:
About 50% of patients' hair will regrow in one year without any treatment. If the affected region is small, it is reasonable to observe the progression of the illness as the problem often spontaneously regresses and the hair grows back. In 90% of cases, the hair will, ultimately, grow back. In the other 10%, only some or no hair will regrow.
What is the cause of alopecia areata?
The cause of alopecia areata remains unknown. An immune mechanism is postulated in which auto- antibodies are produced against the hair follicles and this results in premature shedding of the hair.
Wiki:
Alopecia areata is noncommunicable, or not contagious. It occurs more frequently in people who have affected family members, suggesting that heredity may be a factor. Strong evidence that genes may increase risk for alopecia areata was found by studying families with two or more affected members. This study identified at least four regions in the genome that are likely to contain alopecia areata genes. In addition, it is slightly more likely to occur in people who have relatives with autoimmune diseases.
The condition is thought to be an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks its own hair follicles and suppresses or stops hair growth. There is evidence that T cell lymphocytes cluster around these follicles, causing inflammation and subsequent hair loss. An unknown environmental trigger such as emotional stress or a pathogen is thought to combine with hereditary factors to cause the condition.Treatment:
Consult your doctor.
There is no reliable treatment for alopecia areata since spontaneous regrowth occurs in most patients. Many forms of therapy including intralesional or topical steroids, anthralin or contact sensitisation have demonstrated short term hair regrowth, but they do not alter the long term course of alopecia areata. In complete hair loss, wearing a wig may be helpful.Sweet potatoes are a dynamite source of beta-carotene (their bright orange color is a dead giveaway). Your body converts beta-carotene to vitamin A, a nutrient that helps to continually generate new, healthy skin cells.
I like to turn sweet potatoes into crispy oven-baked French fries. Cut peeled potatoes into ¼-inch strips and spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet coated with oil spray. Mist the fries with oil spray and season with salt, black pepper, or any other seasonings (ground cinnamon, curry powder, and chili powder are all fun options). Bake in a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes, flipping the fries halfway through. I finish my fries under the broiler for 5 minutes to get them extra crispy!
2. Balsamic Carrots
Like sweet potatoes, carrots come equipped with a generous supply of beta-carotene. In addition to its pivotal role in skin cell renewal, beta-carotene acts as a potent antioxidant, sopping up damaging free radicals that accelerate skin aging.
Fend off wrinkles with my recipe for Roasted Balsamic Carrots. Cut 1 pound of peeled carrots into 1/2-inch wedges. Spread the carrots over half of a large sheet of aluminum foil, and sprinkle them with ¼ cup balsamic vinegar, 2 tablespoons minced fresh rosemary, 2 cloves minced garlic, ¼ teaspoon paprika, salt, and pepper. Drizzle the carrots with 1 tablespoon olive oil and fold the foil over to create a tightly sealed packet. Place on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for 25 minutes or until the carrots are tender.
3. Spinach Marinara
Spinach delivers a triple of dose of wrinkle-fighting antioxidants: vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene. All three work in concert to protect your skin from the sun's UV rays so it stays vibrant and healthy.
Make a quick spinach marinara sauce by wilting fresh spinach leaves into a pot of simmering tomato sauce, then serve over pasta or grilled chicken cutlets.
4. Toasted Pecans
Pecans are one of a short list of foods rich in Vitamin E, a nutrient that's vital to skin health. By forming a protective barrier in the cell membranes of your skin, the vitamin E in pecans helps to ward off harmful free radicals and therefore helps to keep skin firm and elastic.
Pecans are delicious on their own, but toasting them makes them incredibly buttery and rich...they're like candy! Spread pecans on an ungreased baking sheet and toast them in a preheated 350 degree oven (or a toaster oven) for about 10 minutes (watch them closely to make sure they don't burn). Enjoy them whole as a scrumptious snack, or chop them up and sprinkle them into oatmeal or low-fat yogurt.

There is surely something special about Apple and January 27, 2010. Even if not, the whole online world is buzzing with rumors about the products that Apple will be unveiling in the event it is hosting on 27th January.
The products from Apple’s development house have always been most anticipated and rumored. The products have always been surrounded with speculation be it iPhone, iPod or any other.
This time, the most rumored products are: a tablet PC from Apple (rumored as iSlate), the new version of Apple iPhone OS ( iPhone OS 4.0) and iLife 2010 software.
On the same venue, that marked the return of Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs after health problems, the company will unveil its latest creation, as it invites the journalists by sending an email invitation.
If we really do get to see the walk-through of a new tablet from Apple (or an iSlate) in the event, it will be the first major product from company in 3 years, after iPhone. As many people are saying and blogs are reporting, iSlate is presumed to bridge the gap between smartphones and laptops
. We have already seen many rumored pictures of a concept tablet from Apple before like this:
Apple Tablet
Apple tablet will be a new mobile device from Apple that will be a crossover between tablet PCs and ultra-thin notebooks. It will be a multi-touch device and will most probably include all the features that a new generation notebook includes: cloud-hosted OS, average storage memory, no optical drive but with a much larger display. The screen size of this device can be anywhere between 7-12 inches. BoyGenius has reported the size of its screen to be 7 inches, and many tech blogs are going by its words. But we disagree to this fact. We expect the size of screen in this device to be atleast 10-11 inches. Also, this event will most probably be just a demo of this conceptual device. Many blogs have claimed the availability of this device until March 2010. But we think, this device will take many more months to be available as a finished product.
Apple iPhone OS 4.0
Obviously as Apple has clarified in its invitation mail to everyone, it will not just be only the new tablet that will be gathering all the media coverage, people will also witness the new and improved iPhone OS 4.0.
As we expect, Apple will only show a demo of the new iPhone 4.0 and no physical implementation. But still the features we are expecting are important enough to be atleast announced at this event. We think that the new iPhone OS 4.0 will be more focussed towards multi-touch and multitasking. From multiple sources, the highlights of the iPhone 4.0 will be:
1. Twitlive
P.S.: The event will be held in San Francisco on 27th January 10AM which is Singapore time, 28th January 2AM.Enter TCC Perfect 10 high tea promotion … a specially created high tea set that comes with a choice of TCC Premium blend or tea of the day that will make you jump for joy.

ASIA’S first Victoria’s Secret store is slated to open in Resorts World Sentosa on 20th January 2010 – the same day that four of the integrated resort’s hotels will open.
The 2,787 sq m boutique of the coveted American lingerie brand will be the first luxury retail store to open in the integrated resort.
Malaysian-based retailer Valiram Group, the sole operator of the resort’s luxury retail segment, will also be bringing in a slew of luxury names, including brands that are new here, such as Damiani and Canali.
my paper understands that it will also be opening a beauty hall and a Swiss watch gallery with a selection of more than 25 brands, such as Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. These are expected to open by Chinese New Year, which falls on Feb 14 and 15 this year.
The retailer’s director, Mr Ashvin Valiram, told The Business Times last month that the target audience for the resort’s luxury retail segment comprises tourists and high rollers.
Nonetheless, Victoria’s Secret fans here – like Ms Camellia Tan, 31, a regional associate brand director with an advertising firm – are excited about its opening in Singapore finally.
For four years now, she has been able to lay hands on its apparel only by purchasing from its online store.
She checks the website every two months or so, and spends US$100 (S$139) to US$200 at one go, buying mostly bikini sets, dresses and underwear.
When told that a Victoria’s Secret boutique would be making its debut in Singapore, she gasped and said: “That is awesome! Then I’ll get to try on stuff, instead of having to send stuff in the wrong size back to the United States via a courier service.”
Novia : It will be interesting to pop by someday, but the product range is really limited in-stores even in United States (Hopefully Singapore's branch has a wider range). It will be really beneficial to the consumers if they provide FREE SHIPPING in/to Singapore!
