Alopecia Areata / Patchy Hair Loss Part I - Introduction

0

Alopecia areata.... Wow, what a big word I used to think. In layman terms, it means patchy hair loss.

I first discovered that I had patchy hair loss when I was in polytechnic, working really hard in school and coping with my part time job to pay school fees. I was really shocked and upset when I discovered that I had patches on my scalp that's bare... Yes... round circles of smooth baldness with no hints of any strands of hair. As I was barely 18/19, I couldn't understand why I am experiencing hair loss issues. I remembered crying badly and hearing suggestions from my Mum that shaving the entire head will help hair regrowth. She even suggested getting a wig.... *Maybe that's why I cried so badly because adults scares you with really creative (CRANKY) ideas.*

Around a year plus back, late 2008, I realized some symptoms coming back again....

Notice the top bare patch? The bottom patches are recovering areas with hair growing out slowly. Fortunately, the current condition is not really visible and can be easily covered.

Taken from National Skin Centre and Wikipedia, I will like to introduce and share more information about this common hair skin disorder:

Alopecia Areata
What is alopecia areata? Alopecia areata is a common skin disorder seen in children and young adults. It is characterized by hair loss in localized round areas on the scalp and occasionally on the eyebrows. A positive family history for alopecia areata is found in 10% to 20% of patients.

Novia: Known to be fairly common amond young adults. Personally I've known 4 other friends who experienced the same condition and only 1 of them is more severe but the others are recovering well.

In short, I understand the condition as a genetic disorder, caused by overactive antibodies which attack hair follicles mistakenly.

What is the chance of hair regrowing?
The prognosis for most children is excellent. Complete regrowth of the hair occurs within a year in 95% of children with alopecia areata. About 30% will have a future episode of alopecia areata. Rarely, all the scalp hair or all the scalp and body hair are lost in the disease.

Wiki:
About 50% of patients' hair will regrow in one year without any treatment. If the affected region is small, it is reasonable to observe the progression of the illness as the problem often spontaneously regresses and the hair grows back. In 90% of cases, the hair will, ultimately, grow back. In the other 10%, only some or no hair will regrow.

What is the cause of alopecia areata?
The cause of alopecia areata remains unknown. An immune mechanism is postulated in which auto- antibodies are produced against the hair follicles and this results in premature shedding of the hair.

Wiki:

Alopecia areata is noncommunicable, or not contagious. It occurs more frequently in people who have affected family members, suggesting that heredity may be a factor. Strong evidence that genes may increase risk for alopecia areata was found by studying families with two or more affected members. This study identified at least four regions in the genome that are likely to contain alopecia areata genes. In addition, it is slightly more likely to occur in people who have relatives with autoimmune diseases.

The condition is thought to be an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks its own hair follicles and suppresses or stops hair growth. There is evidence that T cell lymphocytes cluster around these follicles, causing inflammation and subsequent hair loss. An unknown environmental trigger such as emotional stress or a pathogen is thought to combine with hereditary factors to cause the condition.

Novia: In short, the cause of alopecia areata is still unknown. I have no direct family members who has alopecia areata but only my father's brother who experienced it. Emotional stress could potentially contribute to it. Hence always wise to be positive and take life easier.

Treatment:

Consult your doctor.

There is no reliable treatment for alopecia areata since spontaneous regrowth occurs in most patients. Many forms of therapy including intralesional or topical steroids, anthralin or contact sensitisation have demonstrated short term hair regrowth, but they do not alter the long term course of alopecia areata. In complete hair loss, wearing a wig may be helpful.

Wiki:
Steroid injections are commonly used in sites where there are small areas of hair loss on the head or especially where eyebrow hair has been lost. Some other medications used are minoxidil, irritants (anthralin or topical coal tar), and topical immunotherapy cyclosporine, each of which are sometimes used in different combinations. Oral corticosteroids decrease the hair loss, but only for the period during which they are taken, and these drugs have adverse side effects.

Novia: In my next article, I will share my personal experience with treating alopecia areata.

0

I'm off to Langkawi for a 4D3N trip to celebrate my beaut's 32nd Birthday with something I've specially planned for him. (I hope it will work out!!!) This trip is also a advance Valentine's day celebration as CNY falls on the same day as Valentines' for 2010.

Bon voyage to me!

Cyborg 2199

It's been a while since I last sat down and focus on serious digital imaging. Besides modeling and being a big foodie, messing around in photoshop is one of my favorite pastime. I can really spend hours and hours on enhancing one single image. The outcome will always be really fruitful and satisfying as I explore new techniques and tricks.

Check out one of my latest work as above! Cyborg Novia with a real cool background. Enjoy!

4 Foods to Help You Look Years Younger

0

I will probably eat only #1 & #4. =P

1. Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet potatoes are a dynamite source of beta-carotene (their bright orange color is a dead giveaway). Your body converts beta-carotene to vitamin A, a nutrient that helps to continually generate new, healthy skin cells.

I like to turn sweet potatoes into crispy oven-baked French fries. Cut peeled potatoes into ¼-inch strips and spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet coated with oil spray. Mist the fries with oil spray and season with salt, black pepper, or any other seasonings (ground cinnamon, curry powder, and chili powder are all fun options). Bake in a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes, flipping the fries halfway through. I finish my fries under the broiler for 5 minutes to get them extra crispy!

2. Balsamic Carrots
Like sweet potatoes, carrots come equipped with a generous supply of beta-carotene. In addition to its pivotal role in skin cell renewal, beta-carotene acts as a potent antioxidant, sopping up damaging free radicals that accelerate skin aging.

Fend off wrinkles with my recipe for Roasted Balsamic Carrots. Cut 1 pound of peeled carrots into 1/2-inch wedges. Spread the carrots over half of a large sheet of aluminum foil, and sprinkle them with ¼ cup balsamic vinegar, 2 tablespoons minced fresh rosemary, 2 cloves minced garlic, ¼ teaspoon paprika, salt, and pepper. Drizzle the carrots with 1 tablespoon olive oil and fold the foil over to create a tightly sealed packet. Place on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for 25 minutes or until the carrots are tender.

3. Spinach Marinara
Spinach delivers a triple of dose of wrinkle-fighting antioxidants: vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene. All three work in concert to protect your skin from the sun's UV rays so it stays vibrant and healthy.

Make a quick spinach marinara sauce by wilting fresh spinach leaves into a pot of simmering tomato sauce, then serve over pasta or grilled chicken cutlets.

4. Toasted Pecans
Pecans are one of a short list of foods rich in Vitamin E, a nutrient that's vital to skin health. By forming a protective barrier in the cell membranes of your skin, the vitamin E in pecans helps to ward off harmful free radicals and therefore helps to keep skin firm and elastic.

Pecans are delicious on their own, but toasting them makes them incredibly buttery and rich...they're like candy! Spread pecans on an ungreased baking sheet and toast them in a preheated 350 degree oven (or a toaster oven) for about 10 minutes (watch them closely to make sure they don't burn). Enjoy them whole as a scrumptious snack, or chop them up and sprinkle them into oatmeal or low-fat yogurt.

Apple iPad - What's Missing?

0

Apple revealed their latest creation iPad yesterday. To most users (including myself), disappointments overwhelms excitement. Of course, it might be too early to predict the scalability and potential of iPad. But the lack of features doesn't entice me to purchase an unit immediately.

It's positioned to reduce the gap between a smart phone and laptop. But it does not support:

- Make phone calls
- Take pictures or videos
- Imaging editing software such as photoshop
- Flash or Javascript

But it is certainly:
- Very sleek looking
- Enhanced entertainment with bigger screen for games and videos
- Or I call it a.... Giant super-sized iTouch.

Will it be a white elephant??? We shall see in months to come...

Grilled Bacon Wrapped Sausage

0

This pleasing recipe is bound to satisfy meat lovers and even children with its crispy flavorful bacon and fragrant grilled honey coating.

Ingredients

* Two packs or ten good quality sausages (I usually buy from cold storage)
* 1 pack bacon
* 2 bell peppers
* 4 big tomatoes
* 4 tablespoons honey or maple syrup

Directions

- Preheat your oven to 325°.

- De-seed and cut the bell peppers into quarters. Line bell peppers and halve cut tomatoes in deep microwavable dish.

- Wrap each sausage with a slice of bacon. Brush and coat sausages with honey or maple syrup.

- Set each wrapped sausage on top of the vegetables, pop into the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the sausages and bacon are cooked to a crispy brown. Turn sausages over to the other side and repeat grilling them till crispy brown.

- Eat fresh from the oven or reheat later when you are ready to serve. Bake and share. It’s that easy!

Watch Live Coverage of Apple Event on 27th January 2010 Online

0

There is surely something special about Apple and January 27, 2010. Even if not, the whole online world is buzzing with rumors about the products that Apple will be unveiling in the event it is hosting on 27th January.

The products from Apple’s development house have always been most anticipated and rumored. The products have always been surrounded with speculation be it iPhone, iPod or any other.

This time, the most rumored products are: a tablet PC from Apple (rumored as iSlate), the new version of Apple iPhone OS ( iPhone OS 4.0) and iLife 2010 software.

On the same venue, that marked the return of Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs after health problems, the company will unveil its latest creation, as it invites the journalists by sending an email invitation.

If we really do get to see the walk-through of a new tablet from Apple (or an iSlate) in the event, it will be the first major product from company in 3 years, after iPhone. As many people are saying and blogs are reporting, iSlate is presumed to bridge the gap between smartphones and laptops

. We have already seen many rumored pictures of a concept tablet from Apple before like this:

appletablet

Apple has always been known to keep things secret till the last-minute. So, we cannot even confirm that we will see a new tablet from Apple. But this tablet is rumored to have been in development since years, and this time is perfect for Apple to surprise the fans with another innovation that can rule the computing era for another decade, much like the iPhone or iPod. But, at the same, the company cannot ignore its competitors like HP, Lenovo and others who have already showcased their tablet prototypes at the CES a few days ago.

No news or details about Apple tablet (iSlate), or iPhone OS 4.0 or iLife 2010 is confirmed till now, but still the brand name Apple will be enough for people around the world to be excited and keep their fingers crossed for this big event.

Here is our review and speculation about what we expect to see at this big event:

Apple Tablet

Apple tablet will be a new mobile device from Apple that will be a crossover between tablet PCs and ultra-thin notebooks. It will be a multi-touch device and will most probably include all the features that a new generation notebook includes: cloud-hosted OS, average storage memory, no optical drive but with a much larger display. The screen size of this device can be anywhere between 7-12 inches. BoyGenius has reported the size of its screen to be 7 inches, and many tech blogs are going by its words. But we disagree to this fact. We expect the size of screen in this device to be atleast 10-11 inches. Also, this event will most probably be just a demo of this conceptual device. Many blogs have claimed the availability of this device until March 2010. But we think, this device will take many more months to be available as a finished product.

Apple iPhone OS 4.0

Obviously as Apple has clarified in its invitation mail to everyone, it will not just be only the new tablet that will be gathering all the media coverage, people will also witness the new and improved iPhone OS 4.0.

iphone

As we expect, Apple will only show a demo of the new iPhone 4.0 and no physical implementation. But still the features we are expecting are important enough to be atleast announced at this event. We think that the new iPhone OS 4.0 will be more focussed towards multi-touch and multitasking. From multiple sources, the highlights of the iPhone 4.0 will be:

  1. Multi-touch: iPhone OS 4.0 will introduce system wide support for multi-touch.
  2. Multitasking: The new generation of iPhone OS will enable you to run multiple apps in the background. This certainly sounds exciting for the device that has the biggest market of mobile apps.
  3. Upgrade: The OS upgrade will be available for iPhone and iPhone 3GS.
  4. Sync and UI: We are expecting some more refinements to user interface of iPhone OS, as well as a better approach to sync contacts and calendar applications.
Everyone will get the real facts, only at this event on January 27th, 2010. We hope that many of our expected features will come very near to implementation.

It was a very short shoot and I like this particular shot taken by Felix. It looks kind of...... sad. Works well to portray the glittering tears designed by Fann. It feels that she's longing for something, waiting for someone. It feels like forever and she is worried but still keeping the hope up high. *Emo*

Digital Imaging Magic

1

I've always have a passion for multimedia especially digital imaging. Thanks to Aylwin and Felix for inviting me to the SUPER last minute shoot that was really fun. And I'm really inspired to whip out my..... mouse to play with some digital enhancements. (Yes yes yes... I NEED a Walcom board!!! Any kind souls will sponsor me one???)

Thanks Fann for the fantastic makeup! In this image, I have redrew the catchlight, moon and added in iris veins. The makeup was also touched up and enhanced further. A tighter crop was perform and some cloning on the top to focus the entire image on the face.

Red hot passion! I love the composition for this image. Basic cleaning up of the face was performed and as usual, I will redraw and enhance the eyes even more. Red cloth was cloned to lengthen it and a overall red gel like lighting was added to bring out the mood.

Our Very Own Victoria's Secret

0

Sun, Jan 24, 2010
my paper

Victoria's Secret opens at IR
by Rachel Chan

ASIA’S first Victoria’s Secret store is slated to open in Resorts World Sentosa on 20th January 2010 – the same day that four of the integrated resort’s hotels will open.

The 2,787 sq m boutique of the coveted American lingerie brand will be the first luxury retail store to open in the integrated resort.

Malaysian-based retailer Valiram Group, the sole operator of the resort’s luxury retail segment, will also be bringing in a slew of luxury names, including brands that are new here, such as Damiani and Canali.

my paper understands that it will also be opening a beauty hall and a Swiss watch gallery with a selection of more than 25 brands, such as Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. These are expected to open by Chinese New Year, which falls on Feb 14 and 15 this year.

The retailer’s director, Mr Ashvin Valiram, told The Business Times last month that the target audience for the resort’s luxury retail segment comprises tourists and high rollers.

Nonetheless, Victoria’s Secret fans here – like Ms Camellia Tan, 31, a regional associate brand director with an advertising firm – are excited about its opening in Singapore finally.

For four years now, she has been able to lay hands on its apparel only by purchasing from its online store.

She checks the website every two months or so, and spends US$100 (S$139) to US$200 at one go, buying mostly bikini sets, dresses and underwear.

When told that a Victoria’s Secret boutique would be making its debut in Singapore, she gasped and said: “That is awesome! Then I’ll get to try on stuff, instead of having to send stuff in the wrong size back to the United States via a courier service.”

Novia : It will be interesting to pop by someday, but the product range is really limited in-stores even in United States (Hopefully Singapore's branch has a wider range). It will be really beneficial to the consumers if they provide FREE SHIPPING in/to Singapore!

iPhone OS 4.0??

0

Boy Genius Report claims to have received information from a source regarding iPhone OS 4.0, which is rumored to be introduced at next week's media event in San Francisco. According to the source, iPhone OS 4.0 will be limited to the iPhone 3G and 3GS (presumably including at least more recent iPod touch models and omitting the original iPhone) and will incorporate solutions for multitasking by running applications in the background and a revamped user interface for easier navigation.

  • There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)
  • "A few new ways" to run applications in the background -- multitasking.
  • Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven't had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.
  • The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will "put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers" more than any other phone to date. Everyone is "really excited."
  • The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.

The ability to run iPhone applications in the background has been near the top of many users' wish lists, but Apple has yet to implement full backgrounding and multitasking due to its effect on performance and battery life, instead opting to deploy push notifications as a means for closed applications to serve data to users. The expansion of the ability to run applications in the background beyond those few specified by Apple has been a relatively common theme, with multiple reports suggesting that Apple has been working on ways to deploy the functionality in at least a limited sense, although many expected such developments to be included in iPhone OS 3.0 last year.

PS: Please do not install OS 4.0 immediately as it might brick your iPhone if you have already jailbroken your iPhone.

Photography by Jeff Boyle - Finals!

It's was really a great pleasure to work with Jeff. Patient and humorous. Never stops asking me to try out crazy things and viola. Unique but amazing results!

In this shoot, we decided to go really creative with the makeup and colors.

I really love this serious looking, low key image. And imagine that the decorative around eyebrows were actually inverted eye lashes. Super cool!

Love the eye makeup, love the eye makeup, LOVE the eye makeup!

Very unique perspective that actually caught my attention among the batch of images. Matching eye color with loud dress. Soft expression yet sensual. And it definitely captures the feminine aspects of a woman.

Stunning beauty. Gorgeous profile and effective lighting reveals the fine dimensions of the model's beautiful facial features. Alluring and beautifully-shaped lips, a fine and smooth jawline; gently sloping nose, forehead, and neck; beautifully-proportioned ears and nose; flawlessly smooth complexion; and a beautiful range of white, pink and tan skin tones. Love the wispy hair and the peaceful, quiet and lovely expression.

This arresting composition is truly a feast for the eyes, drawing the viewer's attention to its exquisite beauty.

Wax in the City

1

Picked up a marketing call from Wax in the city two days ago and they invited me down to their store for a $5 manicure or $6 pedicure. Appointment was at 7 and I went down to the branch in Tanjong Pagar. Reaching on time, I was told that I have to wait till 7:15 for my manicure treatment as it was a rainy day and the schedule was pushed back. Bad weather and just 15 minutes, why not? *Continues to poke on iPhone and blasting music with my earphones.*

The entire place was spacious and nicely done up. But all the therapists seems to have an *overworked* face and gave a I-don't-wanna-talk-to-you attitude. Ok... Maybe I was wrong, my therapist was actually pretty friendly. I'm not too sure about the reason why they did not have the procedure of soaking hands into warm water before cutting the cuticles. They simply spray some *I presume* anti bacteria liquid before they proceed to cutting off my dead skin. Everything went smoothly and chop-chop. I picked dark glitter romantic purple this time round. Trendy and classic, nice! Then they will usher you to another holding area where you hang around to dry your nails. *Tactical method to sell their package as they can talk to you when you are bored watching paint dry* Perhaps I don't have the look of a potential member, no sales talk till then...

15-20 mins later, my nails were dry and I went to the counter to make payment. I was actually very curious about the membership in this place and hence wanted to know more about the package details. And woah...... Most basic account is $988 dollars that will give you a discounted membership pricing and bonus value around 30%. E.g. Classic manicure $18 dollars and classic pedicure $28 VS normal pricing classic manicure $28 and classic pedicure $38. And they tried to hype up their exclusiveness by claiming that they only service members and not walk in customers. Oh well, I did not take up the package as I love butterflying around and enjoy the flexibility to choose where I can have my nails done up. But hey... $5 for a classic manicure? Haha! Why not?

Super glittery nails!

Rock on!!!!! Decided to do a really cool rock chick shoot with a real electric guitar. It was my first time handling an electric guitar *Boy it was heavy* hence I really didn't know how to hold it. Thanks to Ben and Aylwin for giving me a crash course! We ROX!

Very beautiful image. Love the wispy hair flying in the breeze, the supermodel features and the rocker style. There is a connection with the viewer in this image, as if you are perhaps singing to someone.....

"... Novia got up onto the stage and took the microphone ... she had been wanting to do this for so long ... the lights dimmed then she heard 'Ladies and gentlemen, appearing tonight for the first time: Novia Lim, singing a love song' ... the applause rises and falls like the sound of the surf rolling onto the shore ... then Novia looks straight into the eyes of the man sitting at the table in front and says 'I dedicate this song to you' ... the man stares at her intently, his eyes never looking away ... as she begins to sing a breeze moves through the room, makng her hair fly about her head like wisps of smoke ... making her look even more beautiful than he had ever imagined ... he leaned forrward and smiled, never taking his eyes off her ... she was glowing as she sang, her alluring eyes sparkling like diamonds, her flawless complexion reflecting bck beautiful skin tones ... her angelic voice begins to slow and the notes begin to fall as she finishes singing ... the music stops, the lights brighten, the wind subsides, and she leans over the table and passionately kisses her man ... Sun With Moon Japanese Dining & Cafe

0

I'm actually amazed that I have not been to Sun with Moon despite hearing good raves about them. Time for verdict, let's see how well they fare with their first impression with me!

Salmon Pink Dragon Roll, $13.80 4stars

Very exquisite and well executed sushi roll. The creamy and sweet crab avocado is well balanced with fresh thinly sliced salmon. Perfected with a hint of lemon slice and salty fish roe. Yumz!

Yellow Tail Sashimi, $17.80 4stars

You cannot go wrong with fresh sashimi. The yellow tail here passed my stringent taste test as it has a subtle sweetness and almost melts in my mouth. It can be quite costly for 5 slices of fish but it's definitely an eye candy as it is plated delicately on top of craved ice accompanied with seaweed by the side.

Hokkaido Ramen, $15.80 3.5stars

The buttery taste really retained my attention but the noodle is slightly too soft for my liking. Comfort food and nice combination for the chilly night.

Okonomiyaki, $12.80 3.5stars

Pan fried very nicely but I love my okonomiyaki to be serve with more sauce!

Goshoimo Mentaiko Cheese Yaki, $15.80 4stars

This dish is very pleasing! They balanced the rich taste with broccoli. Cheesy and not too overpowering to the taste buds.

Kamameshi

The signature dish of Sun with Moon is the Kamameshi, a more delicate cousin of our local claypot rice. The kamameshi is served with a small hourglass on top. When the time is up, you can then lift the lid and start enjoying this dish. A bit gimmicky but cute and delightful nonetheless.

Unagi & Asari Kamameshi, $15.80 3.5stars

I had the unagi and clam kamameshi. The unagi was juicy but the clams were a little too dry and not too sweet. It definitely satisfy my carb cravings and can be quite filling.

I was quite impressed with the overall experience in Sun with Moon and will definitely return again!

Rib-eye Steak in Red Wine Sauce / Cranberry Walnut Brown Rice

0

It's always nice to enjoy a good dinner on a Saturday night. I went down to cold storage, grabbed some fresh rib-eye steaks and used the opened bottle of red wine that's sitting quietly in my fridge. There's also one big unopened bag of brown rice that I've not yet cast any recipes on. Eeks? Brown rice? Yes, I'm hearing you saying that... With this recipe, I assure you that even brown rice can be yummilicious!

Rib-eye Steak

* 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1 tablespoon olive oil

Red Wine Sauce
* 3/4 cup dry red wine
* 1/4 cup water
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1 teaspoon tomato paste
* 1 teaspoon flour

Cranberry Walnut Brown Rice
* 1 cup brown rice
* 2 1/2 cups water
* 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 cup cranberries, chopped
*
